AI agent instructions are the short document that tells your support agent who it is, how it talks, what it may do, and where it must stop. The documents you upload give the agent facts; the instructions give it judgment. Most bad bot behavior — the overconfident wrong answer, the tone-deaf reply, the endless loop — traces back to missing or vague instructions, not to a bad model. Writing them well is the highest-leverage hour in any agent setup.
The five parts every instruction set needs
Role: one sentence naming the agent and its job (“You are the support agent for a dental clinic, helping patients book, reschedule, and prepare for appointments”). Tone: how it sounds — warm and plain, never corporate, never slang it cannot sustain. Knowledge rules: answer only from the business's documents, say “I don't know” rather than invent, and never quote a price, deadline, or policy that isn't in the documents. Boundaries: what it must never do — no refunds, no medical or legal advice, no promises about delivery dates. Escalation: exactly when to hand off to a human, and what to say while doing it. Miss any one of the five and customers will find the gap.
Write rules, not essays
Instructions work best as short, testable rules: “If the customer asks about a refund, offer the refund policy summary and hand off.” Vague aspirations (“be helpful and delightful”) produce vague behavior. Write each rule so you can test it with one message: send the message, check the reply, fix the rule. Ten precise rules beat fifty lines of brand poetry. And keep the facts out of the instructions — prices, hours, and policies belong in the uploaded documents, where they can be updated without rewriting the prompt. The document-training side is covered in the
training guide — instructions and documents are partners, not substitutes.
A template you can copy
Role: You are [business]'s support agent on WhatsApp. Tone: friendly, plain, short sentences; one question at a time. Knowledge: answer only from the business documents; if unsure, say so and offer to connect a human. Boundaries: never promise refunds, discounts, or dates not stated in the documents; never share internal notes. Escalation: hand off on anger, refund requests, or a second failed answer, saying “Let me connect you with our team — one moment.” End every resolved answer by asking whether anything else is needed. Adapt the brackets, test ten real questions, and revise whatever surprised you.
Founder: “The bot kept inventing a 20% discount.” The fix was one instruction line: “Never mention a discount unless it appears in the documents.” One line, problem gone.

Questions fréquentes
- What are AI agent instructions?
- The system prompt that defines the agent's role, tone, knowledge rules, boundaries, and escalation triggers. Documents supply facts; instructions supply judgment about how to use them.
- How long should AI agent instructions be?
- Short and rule-shaped: ten to twenty precise rules beat pages of brand prose. Each rule should be testable with a single customer message.
- What is the most important instruction to include?
- Answer only from the business's documents and say you don't know rather than inventing. That one rule prevents the majority of harmful bot answers — wrong prices, fake policies, invented discounts.
- Should facts like prices go in the instructions or the documents?
- In the documents. Facts change; instructions shouldn't need rewriting every time a price or opening hour changes. Instructions hold the behavior, documents hold the facts.
- Can I write Neksio agent instructions without code?
- Yes — Neksio is no-code. You write instructions in plain language, upload documents, and connect WhatsApp. Free covers 100 AI replies a month on WhatsApp; Starter $8.99 for 5,000, Growth $11.99 for 15,000 including Facebook and Instagram, Scale $29.99.
